Ant and Dec
A number of readers from South Lanarkshire have been in touch to share their views about the 'war chest' worth around £700,000 which has been accumulated by the local Unison branch.
One person queried how such a large 'cash mountain' could have been allowed to build up over the years, while another wondered with Unison 'rolling in money' why didn't the union enlist the help of Ant and Dec to publicise the fight for equal pay?
Now that last suggestion made me laugh, but then again this is the same union that actively discouraged its members from pursuing equal pay claims against Labour-run South Lanarkshire Council.
So I suppose it's a tad unlikely that they would have thought of inviting Ant and Dec to help fight the good fight in support of equal pay, even with all that dosh (the members' money of course) at their disposal.
As I understand the position, this massive fund was originally intended to support industrial action and situations where Unison members went on strike.
But as far as I know there have been no major disputes in South Lanarkshire Council over the last 10 years - and certainly not in pursuit of equal pay for the lowest paid union members.
