FIFA in the Dock

I wrote this post about FIFA's Captain Bligh and Chuck Blazer four years ago and now the chickens have come home to roost because it appears that the former head of the Americas Football Confederation (Concacaf's Chuck Blazer) is a key witness in exposing the widespread racketeering that has been going within the governing bod of world football for many years.

At the time of writing this post - Sepp Blatter is about to be crowned as President of FIFA - for another four years.

I heard earlier that in his speech to the FIFA Congress - Blatter (75) was forced to concede that the world footballing authority was sailing through 'troubled waters'.

But that Blatter - as the ship's experienced captain - was the right man to steer FIFA out of the crisis and safely to shore.

Well if that's true, then Captain Blatter should change his name to Captain Bligh - immediately.

Because the whole sorry business has descended into a complete farce - as FIFA tried yesterday to sack the whistleblower at the centre of the bribery allegations - an American with the unlikely name of Chuck Blazer.

Blazer is chief executive of the Americas Footbal Federation - which includes the Caribbean - and has made allegations about FIFA delegates being given bribes to vote in a particular way.

The President of Blazer's Football Federation has been suspended on the back of these allegations.

But yesterday the acting President (and Blatter supporter) tried to sack Chuck Blazer - in a hastily convened meeting of four people - in someone's hotel bedroom.

Talk about shooting the messenger!

The big sponsors - Coca Cola, Adidas, Emirates Airlines, Visa, and Sony - must be cringing in embarrassment at FIFA's bullying and arrogant behaviour.

Just because people vote for something or someone - doesn't mean that their views are true - or legitimate even.

The FIFA delegates can vote that the moon is made of green cheese - for all I care.

But that doesn't mean the rest of us have to believe them.
