Physician, Heal Thyself!

The European Union is a good thing in my view and I would vote to remain a member if a referendum were held now or in the foreseeable future

But there is no doubt that many of its institutions are badly in need of reform and that given the recent enormous bailouts in the Eurozone area, the European Commission in particular is in no position to advise the UK on how to run its economy.

The latest edition of Private Eye captures this bizarre situation only too well a typically cheeky tongue in cheek article.

Brussels Tells UK How To Run Economy

By Our EU Staff Jean-Claude Junkbond

The European Commission last night told George Osborne that it was "not al all happy" about the way he was running the UK economy.

"It is outrageous," said a senior Commission official, Henrich von Titzup, "that the British economy is growing more rapidly than the rest of Europe, that unemployment is falling and that wages are rising faster than the cost of living.

"All this," he said, "is a gross breach of our competition rules and contrary to the spirit of European co-operation.

"Such unprincipled behaviour is clearly designed solely to make the rest of us look bad."

The Commission has instructed the British Governemnt to take the following steps to bring the UK into line with its European competitors. Britain must:

  • join Eurozone immediately
  • take out enormous loans from European Central Bank (Germany) which it cannot possibly repay
  • impose rigorous austerity measures as advised by Mrs Merkel
  • promote masss civil unrest
  • encourage rise of far-right parties
  • ...er...
  • That's it...

Mr Osborne last night thanked the Commission for its "interesting ideas" and promised to give them "very serious thought".
