Putin's Legacy

Peter Brookes cartoon
As the Olympic Games in Sochi draw to a close Peter Brookes in The Times captures the mood and political intention of President Putin as far as countries like Ukraine, Belarus and Georgia are concerned - treat them like proxy states as they were under the old Soviet Union and meddle in their internal affairs, using the excuse that they remain within the Russian Federation's sphere of influence.

A policy that is not so different to the Stalinist monarchy which operates in North Korea under the Kim Jong-un, but which could not survive without the support of China whose leaders are not remotely interested in democracy, human rights or the terrible living conditions of the North Korean people.

Whatever can be said about the current situation in Ukraine one thing is clear - the European Union is not an expansionist, imperialist empire which is trying to use the Ukraine and its people for Europe's own ends.

So I hope that on this occasion President Putin has bitten off more than he can chew.
