Myths and Magicians

Penn Jillette is the big brash half of the magical double act known as Penn and Teller - whose tricks and illusions I have watched on TV many a time.

But I didn't realise Penn Jillete was such an intelligent, articulate guy - able and willing to speak up about the insanity of organised religion when its advocates try to argue that their Holy Books such as the Bible or Qu'ran - represent the literal word of God.

So, here is Penn Jillette speaking from the heart - reliving his experience as a young man who was brought up to think a certain way, but who used his own innate intelligence to mull things over and make up his own mind.

I can vouch for his suggestion that one of the best things to do in this situation is to read these Holy Books yourself - they are full of atrocities, horrors and ridiculous tales which include the occasional homily on how to live a good life, but in truth the Bible is no more believable than the creation myths of the ancient Greeks.
