Many Hands Make Light Work

Here's a Twitter exchange I had recently with a regular reader of the blog who is understandably frustrated at the length of time it is taking for settlement negotiations with Glasgow City Council to show any visible signs of progress.

I agree and I am obviously doing what I can to get the message across that, while the mood music may have changed from the council's political leadership, there is still a real problem with the attitude of senior officials who seem not to accept that the City Council's handling of equal pay over the years amounts to a huge national scandal.

Even now officials refuse to explain their behaviour in relation to the WPBR and deny that the 'unfit for purpose' pay scheme was designed deliberately to favour traditional male jobs - at the expense of a predominantly female workforce.

I suspect the next scheduled settlement meeting on 17 April 2018 will be crucial and that soon after this the claimants will know whether Council officials are prepared to address the big issues and negotiate in good faith.

So if you haven't done so already, contact your local councillors, MSPs and MPs - and let them know what you think.

I just wish they would get on with it !

M

So do I - but I doubt 'they' will get on with it until elected councillors and other Glasgow politicians face up to the extent of the scandal over the 'unfit for purpose' WPBR - and the more claimants who raise these issues with their elected MSPs, MPs and councillors the better

Mark

It’s ridiculous! Can the court not intervene again ?

M

What is ridiculous?

Mark

That they are refusing to accept its unfit for purpose. The court of session has already said it is. Can they not speed up the process ?

M

The only way to 'speed up' the process is to persuade Glasgow's councillors and other politicians that the City Council's senior officials are part of the problem - so the more people who get involved the better!

Mark

What can I do to help ?

M

You can raise these issues with your local councillors, MSPs and MPs - as I am doing in my own local council ward and parliamentary constituencies. All of the information you need is on the blog site. You could also round up a few others and visit your councillors, MSPs and MPs

Mark

I shall be on the case ASAP

M

Good let me know how you get on because this will encourage other Glasgow claimants to get involved as well!

Glasgow's 'Unfit For Purpose' WPBR

Glasgow City Council keeps asking that the equal pay claimant organisations (A4ES, GMB and Unison) to explain why the discredited Workforce Pay and Benefits Review (WPBR) has to go.

So here's the claimants case in a nutshell:

"Glasgow's WPBR is riddled with invented 'rules' which blatantly discriminate against the City Council's predominantly female workforce which is why three senior judges in the Court of Session, Scotland's highest civil court, came to their unanimous decision that the WPBR is 'unfit for purpose'.

"The same three judges also reached a unanimous decision that Glasgow City Council would not be granted leave to appeal their 'unfit for purpose' judgement to the UK Supreme Court."

If any council official or elected member needs more evidence on the discriminatory nature of the WPBR, here is a detailed explanation from my blog site which I'm happy to discuss further and/or follow up with a face-to-face meeting.
