Elaine McNeill, RIP

The funeral of Elaine McNeill is taking place later today at Lambhill Crematorium in Glasgow and as a mark of respect to a much loved and popular colleague Elaine's co-workers from Cordia will be wearing their uniforms to the service.

Elaine was a long-serving carer with Glasgow City Council who suddenly took ill, during last week's appalling weather conditions, as she was on her way to visit some of the vulnerable clients that Glasgow's Home Carers support on a daily basis.

Today will be a sombre day for Elaine's family and many friends, a time to pause and  reflect, while celebrating Elaine's life and times.

It's also fair to point that Elaine is typical of the thousands of low paid, predominantly female, workers who have been treated as 'second class citizens' by Glasgow City Council for many years.

A fundraising page has been set up to support Elaine's family at this most difficult of times: www.gofundme.com/elainemcneill

Dying for Equal Pay (09/03/18)

The Evening Times reported on the tragic death of Elaine McNeill, a long-serving council care worker, who took ill on her way to work during the appalling weather conditions of last week.

Amongst other things this is a sad reminder that there is a very human cost to the long fight for equal pay which has been dragging on in Glasgow for more than 10 years.

Care community from across the UK rallies for fundraising drive for tragic Elaine McNeill who died on her way to work

THE care community has rallied together for a young mother who died on her way to work in North Glasgow - by raising thousands in just a few days in her memory.

The fundraising drive for Elaine McNeill began after she was found in the snow on Kippen Street on Wednesday morning.

The Cordia care worker had taken ill on her way to work and the alarm was raised when her manager was unable to locate her.

Her devastated co-workers rallied together to start up a Go Fund Me page and the target of £5,000 has almost been achieved with well-wishers donating £4,510 so far.

Care workers from across the UK, however, are among those who have contributed to the cause.

One post on the Go Fund Me page read: “Sent on behalf of all our care staff at Select Care Support Manchester. Sleep well Elaine.”

Another read: “Sympathies from SmartCare in Surrey.”

Elaine was found as temperatures plummeted across the country to below freezing and a red warning was issued by the Met Office.

Police Scotland, however, said they attended a report of a woman having fallen ill on her way to work.

The force said they were treating the death as unexplained.

Cordia previously paid tribute to their popular member of staff and reinforced that they were working with the authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.

A spokesman said: “We are shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Cordia employee, Elaine McNeill in the Milton area of Glasgow.

“Elaine worked with Cordia for 15 years as a popular and valued member of our Home Care team.

“We don’t have any further details about the circumstances of the incident but will be working with the authorities.

“Our thoughts are with her family at this time.”
