Glasgow MSPs and MPs (15/09/18)

An enterprising group of equal pay claimants went to see their local MSP yesterday, James Dornan the member for Glasgow Cathcart.

Now in common with other Glasgow MSPs James has had little to say, up till now at least, about the long-running fight for equal pay in Glasgow City Council.

But fair play to the man - James was happy to meet and hear what his local constituents had to say and I understand that their meeting went very well.

Now this was a private discussion, but the claimants were pleased to have the opportunity to state their case and explain why people feel so strongly that they are all voting in such large numbers to come out on strike.

The claimants have arranged a follow-up meeting in October to keep up a dialogue with their local MSP which seems a good idea to me and the same group also have a meeting next week with their local MP, Stewart McDonald the member for Glasgow South.

James and Stewart are both on Twitter as are all Glasgow MSPs and MPs:

James Dornan - @glasgowcathcart

Stewart McDonald - @StewartMcDonald

If other claimants arrange visits with local Councillors, MSPs or MPs - drop me a note and let me know how things go.

Mandates, Strikes and Politicians (14/09/18)

Here's a very interesting table which shows the turnout and result in the Scottish Parliament elections for the seat of Glasgow Cathcart in 2016.

James Dornan won the seat for the SNP on 52.9% of the total vote and a turnout of 50.3% - and I understand that some of his local Glasgow Cathcart constituents have a meeting with James later today to discuss equal pay.

Now the GMB's astonishing strike ballot resulted in a majority of 98.1% based on a much higher turnout of 62.5% of union members.

So I hope that Glasgow's politicians are listening because the mandate the GMB has received for strike action is arguably much more impressive than the mandates received by many of the City's elected Councillors, MSPs and MPs.

I'll be posting some other interesting facts and figures from around the City in the days ahead - so watch this space.
