Glasgow MSPs - The Fight for Equal Pay

Here's another Twitter discussion on the fight for equal pay in Glasgow City Council.

Now as regular readers know, I've had lots to say about the previous Labour run councils in Glasgow, but this is not a party political battle.

The only thing that concerns me and A4ES is getting a fair and just outcome for the thousands of low paid claimants who have been treated as 'second class citizens' for years.

@GMBGlasgowCC stopping traffic with their Unison colleagues in George Square today, demanding full and fair settlement of all equal pay claims. GMB Scotland’s strike ballot on the issue closes today.

You must be the Rip Van Winkle of Trade Unions. How else have you missed the events of last 10 years when Labour, who you affiliate to, were spending £2.5m to avoid paying this money? Was @LabourRichard not a high heid yin at the time too? Speak up RIchard, love to hear from you

Mark Irvine

“This money” - do you have a figure in mind? GCC’s political leaders have stated publicly that the WPBR pay scheme is discriminatory - yet senior officials have just lodged new defences of the WPBR ahead of a Glasgow ET hearing on 25/09/18. Is the council tail wagging the dog?

Your still not answering my question Mark. Why wait 10 years until Labour are out. I’ve already pledged some of the women I’m going to see what I can find out but I ask again...why now?

I think you asked the GMB that question, not me! But my view is that the game changer came in August 2017 when the highest civil court in Scotland judged the WPBR to be ‘unfit for purpose’. So GCC is now preparing to ‘defend the indefensible’ because negotiations are not underway

John Docherty

I find that one easy James it’s simply political opportunism. What was Richard Leonard’s advice to those same women when he was in charge of the GMB in this part of the country. Why did so many of them Ditch their unions “legal” advice to appoint their own representatives

To be fair, if there’s anything Labour excel at its political opportunism John. Anyway I’m sure RIchard will respond before the night is out. He wouldn’t want to be called chicken like Ruth surely.

I don’t have a ‘dog’ in the fight when it comes to a party political knockabout - the only thing that concerns me and A4ES is getting a fair and just outcome for the thousands of low paid claimants who have been treated shamefully for the past 12 years - and counting!
