Monte Carlo Or Bust (18/08/16)

I've stayed at some nice hotels in my time, but none quite as fancy as the Hotel de Pari in Monte Carlo where Unite boss Len McCluskey has been hanging out recently according to this report in The Telegraph

Apparently, the hotel charges £13 for a bottle of beer and £280 per head for its gourmet menu which gives a whole new meaning to the old saying that 'under socialism everyone will travel first class'.

Len McCluskey, the head of Britain’s biggest trade union and a key Jeremy Corbyn backer, has been photographed relaxing at a £1,200-a-night hotel in Monte Carlo.

The Unite general secretary and former dock worker was seen drinking wine with friends at the world-famous Le Bar Américain at the five-star Hotel de Paris.

Guides say the bar’s “elegant low-key ambiance” and leather seating has the “air of a 1920s speakeasy fit for the characters of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel”.

Wine available includes a Jeroboam of Dom Perignon Rose champagne, vintage 2000, at £12,800, while a bottle of beer is £13. A 50g selection of cavier is priced at £224.

The hotel itself, which opened in 1863, has two Michelin-starred restaurants, one of which boasts a wine cellar holding 400,000 bottles, and overlooks the Mediterranean.

The trip, reported by the Mail on Sunday, comes after Mr McCluskey has been on the front line in Labour’s leadership battle as one of Mr Corbyn’s staunchest supporters.
