Union Advice (11/04/15)

I heard from a number of readers from South Ayrshire the other day, all members of Unite who were advised by their trade union not to accept offers of settlement from the Council, presumably on the basis that their equal pay claims were worth more.

Several years later the claimants have been advised to accept even lower offers from South Ayrshire Council which has cost them thousands of pounds they can ill afford.

Now I find this story quite remarkable because why should an individual member pay the price if their trade union has made such a ghastly and expensive mistake?

Meanwhile up in Dundee, Unite is supporting a strike by porters at Ninewells Hospital which is quite astonishing as we'll because I've never heard of the union taking industrial action on behalf of women members over pay and grading issues in recent years.

So I hope the women members in South Ayrshire are properly compensated for any money they have lost as a result of following Unite's advice.

Dundee hospital porters go on strike over back pay

Porters at Ninewells Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Dundee have gone on strike

Porters at Dundee's Ninewells Hospital have gone on strike after last-ditch talks with NHS Tayside failed.

The Unite union claims staff are owed millions of pounds in back pay after being wrongly graded 10 years ago, something the health board disputes.

Following a series of one-day strikes, more than 100 staff are now on continuous strike, demanding an independent review of wages.

Meetings held on Monday failed to resolve the dispute.

The Royal Victoria Hospital in the city is also affected by the strikes, but NHS Tayside said contingency plans were in place to ensure both hospitals continued to serve patients.
