NLC Update (15/06/15)
Here are some questions that GMB members might wish to ask union leaders and their advisers at the North Lanarkshire equal pay meetings on 18 and 19 June.
1 Why did the GMB decide to restrict the equal pay claims of members in North Lanarkshire to only a three-year protection period back in 2007?
2 Why did the GMB not consult and inform union members of this course of action?
3 Why did the GMB''s legal advisers not warn the union that restricting equal pay claims to only three years put its members in North Lanarkshire at a terrible disadvantage?
4 Why did the GMB's legal advisers not inform and consult union members (i.e. their clients) as to the possible consequences of this course of action?
5 Will the GMB share with members in North Lanarkshire details of all written submissions on this subject between the GMB, its legal advisers and North Lanarkshire Council?
6 Does the GMB now accept that the union has made a serious mistake and has misjudged its handling of my equal pay claim?
7 How has the 'settlement offer' from North Lanarkshire Council been calculated and how much less (percentage wise) are GMB members being offered compared to other equal pay claimants represented by Action 4 Equality Scotland, Fox and Partners Solicitors, Unison and Unite?
8 Will the GMB give an undertaking that the union members in North Lanarkshire will be fully compensated if they lose out financially as a consequence of the GMB's handling of my equal pay claim?
Now I would probably put these points in writing (by email) to the GMB= so that they are put on the record, as well as raising them at the members' meetings on 18 and 19 June 2015.
