News and Propaganda
The Mirror newspaper published had this photo on its front page recently along with a splash about the growth of food banks in the UK, although the Guardian reports that the picture is actually of a child in San Francisco and was taken back in 2009.
Now I'm all in favour of a public debate on who gets what and why in UK society - and the big picture is all about what people get paid for going out and earning a living, what a decent wage means in this day and age, how the cost of living affects different groups, how to help people who are unemployed back into work and what kind of safety net a modern welfare system should provide.
But how that debate is helped by using misleading photographs to make a party political point is beyond me because it comes across as propaganda rather than serious new reporting or journalistic comment.
