A Crazy Idea?

Readers in South Lanarkshire are taking up the challenge to put the spotlight on the council over equal pay - see post dated 14 July 2010.

A very interesting council document has come to light - which makes a mockery of the council's claim to based its Single Status pay arrangements on fair and objective criteria.

More on that particular document to follow - but in the meantime a regular South Lanarkshire readers has come up with an intriguing idea.

Why not stand an 'equal pay' candidate in next year's Scottish Parliament elections?

Now that really would put the cat amongst the pigeons - because all of the political parties would be forced to explain where they stand.

Not just over equal pay - of course they'd all say they agree with the principle.

But what do they have to say about the council concealing pay information - about the council thumbing its nose at the Scottish Parliament's FOI legislation?

A whole number of practical issues would need to be considered including:

1 Where to stand - in which constituency?

2 Who would stand - someone with an equal pay claim?

3 What support would they need - financial and otherwise?

Maybe it's a crazy idea - but then again maybe not - what do other people think?
