The Unions Are Failing Women (2)

Trade unions are so out of touch with their grassroots members that they've backed a bonkers motion at the TUC Congress in Brighton condemning the UK Supreme Court over its ruling that biological sex trumps magical thinking.

The UK Supreme court ruled in March 2025 that biological sex is the foundation stone for equality law across the UK which means that:

1) a woman is an adult human female

2) a trans woman is a man - a biological male

Instead of standing up for women's rights the unions are dancing to the tune of male trans activists who do not speak for ordinary union members.

Trade unions vow to oppose Supreme Court trans ruling

‘It’s trans people they are kicking around,’ one delegate told the TUC conference

Trade unions have vowed to oppose the Supreme Court ruling on transgender issues as they called official guidance on single-sex spaces “flawed”.
Delegates at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) voted unanimously in favour of a motion which said the April ruling went against the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
One representative of the Unison union accused Bridget Phillipson, the equalities minister, of overseeing a “segregation” of trans people in society.
The Supreme Court in April ruled that “sex” in equality law refers to biological sex, and should not be broadened to include trans people with a gender recognition certificate (GRC).
The motion passed by unions on Tuesday said “the Supreme Court ruling of the 16 April goes against both recent and past ECHR judgements”.
It also said interim guidance issued by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) following the ruling was “flawed and inconsistent”.

The watchdog’s guidance said that trans people cannot use lavatories and changing rooms of their preferred gender.
The EHRC is in the process of drawing up full guidance which is expected to be issued later this year.
It is expected to say transgender women must be excluded from single-sex spaces, but will not decree that organisations have to provide them.
Many public bodies, including the NHS and Civil Service, have so far refrained from banning transgender women from female-only spaces until the guidance is issued.
The unions’ motion added that since the Supreme Court ruling “there has been a surge of transphobic hate promoted by the far-Right for political advantage”.
Jenny Black, a transgender woman from Unison, told delegates: “This is not the preserve of the far-Right. It’s the Left as well, and it’s the Labour Government as well.
“They’re using this as a political football and it’s trans people they are kicking around.”
Ms Black spoke of how her employer, a local authority, had considered creating new “trans-only toilets”, adding: “That’s segregation. Segregation in Britain in 2025.”
Julia Georgiou, a member of the TUC LGBT+ committee, accused the Government and in particular Ms Phillipson, of being prepared to “sacrifice trans people”.
The remarks came just hours after Ms Phillipson gave an address to the TUC.
The Labour deputy leadership frontrunner is likely to continue facing criticism from the Left and figures in the trade union movement over her stance on gender issues throughout the contest.
During her speech, a handful of protesters silently held up pride flags and signs that read: “Protect trans lives. Reject the EHRC ‘guidance’”.
Asked about how the Government will ensure “the safety, dignity and human rights of trans people,” Ms Phillipson said: “Now and always, safety, dignity and respect is the cornerstone of our society.
“Trans people continue to enjoy the protection afforded through Labour’s Equality Act to not face prejudice or discrimination or harassment.
“And this Labour Government will introduce a draft Bill to make sure that we deliver a full trans-inclusive ban on conversion practices.
“We will also equalise all existing trans and hate crime legislation to protect trans people.”
Ms Georgiou, who is also transgender, later told delegates: “The EHRC is led by a transphobic chair with their own agenda laid down by a Tory government, but continued by this Labour government, with a new transphobic chair in the wings.”
Barbara Plant, the president of the GMB union, said the EHRC guidance was “ill-considered, rushed and far from being coherent or impartial” and said the Government “can simply avoid it”.
