Glasgow University and the Fight for Equal Pay (10/04/19)

Here's a link to a study by Glasgow University into the role of 'grassroots activity' in the fight for equal pay with Glasgow City Council.

Now it's quite a lengthy paper, but well worth a read, in my view, as the authors (Martin Beirne, Scott Hurrell and Fiona Wilson) focus their attention on coalition building, shifting patterns of allegiance and how ordinary people (in this case thousands of predominantly low paid women) mobilised to become history makers and agents of change.

Here's an extract from the article which mentions yours truly, but there's much more to read and reflect upon via the online library link to the full paper below:

"Irvine was leading much of the activism on this front, for instance, with freedom of information requests, tweets and posts on his A4ES blogsite. For example, he highlighted the hypocrisy of councillors using public funds to cover excessive ‘golden goodbyes’ to senior officials (Irvine, 2017c) whilst fighting the equal pay claims and failing to improve the pay of frontline women workers. His blog also provided the email addresses of all Glasgow members of the Scottish and Westminster parliaments, encouraging readers to raise issues and request support for pay equality at GCC (Irvine, 2017d)."
