Spot On, First Minister

Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, is spot on with this statement which explains how the Scottish Government has handled two complaints of sexual harassment against the former First Minister, Alex Salmond.

The temptation to sweep the whole affair under the carpet must have been enormous, for both the civil servants and politicians involved, but they have stuck to their guns and done the right thing by insisting that women must be able to come forward and be confident that their concerns would be treated seriously.

The Scottish Government does not have the power to hold former ministers and other MSPs to account beyond investigating any complaints they receive and passing the details over to the police if, on the face of things, there is a case to answer.

The fact of the matter is that high profile public figures such as Harvey Weinstein, Rolf Harris, Max Clifford and Jimmy Savile were all brought to justice by 'historical' complaints of sexual harassment even though the original incidents, in some cases, happened years ago.
