What Can Individuals Do To Help?

A Glasgow reader asked the following question the other day about the ongoing fight for equal pay:

"What can I, as an individual, do to help?"

Well, the answer is quite simple:
  1. Vote 'Yes' in the union consultative ballots that are underway about taking strike action
  2. Support the lobby of Glasgow City Council which is being held tomorrow -Thursday 17 May
  3. Write to your local councillors, MSPs and MPs - using information from the blog site and from GMB/Unison
If you need any other help and support to get your message across, let me know.

Glasgow - Handy Contact Details

Here's a post from the blog site archive which contains email contact addresses for Glasgow's 15 constituency MSPs and MPs.

For easy reference here is a link to the City Council's web site which contains contact details for all 85 local Glasgow councillors:

https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=17759

The Council leader, Cllr Susan Aitken, can be contacted at the following email address: susan.aitken@glasgow.gov.uk

If claimants are writing to local councillors, MSPs and MPs - please remember too observe a few important ground rules:
  • put your point across forcefully, but politely
  • don't lose your temper or use offensive language
  • send you comments by email as this will create a permanent record
  • share what you have to say as this will encourage others to follow your lead
Don't be fobbed off with a lot of tosh about 'I've always believed in equal pay' - focus on a specific issue and put your elected representative on the spot to explain where they stand.

If you ask me, Glasgow's politicians - regardless of party - should be prepared to speak out on a wide range of issues surrounding the long-running equal pay dispute including:
  1. Replacing the City Council's discredited WPBR pay scheme which has been condemned as 'unfit for purpose' by Scotland's highest civil court, the Court of Session
  2. Introducing a new Job Evaluation scheme which is open, transparent and commands the support of the workforce
  3. Ending the WPBR's 37 hour 'rule' which was designed to disadvantage the City Council's largely female workforce
  4. Apologising for the creation of Cordia which has treated thousands of Home Carers and other staff as second class citizens for years
  5. Condemning the less favourable treatment of women workers in relation to overtime working and holiday pay
  6. Demanding openness and transparency over the introduction of the WPBR and the role played by the City Council's senior officials

Glasgow's MSPs and MPs (01/05/18)

Here are the email addresses for Glasgow's 15 constituency MSPs and MPs which readers can use to raise issues and ask for support in the ongoing fight for equal pay with Glasgow City Council.

Now I would just ask politicians if they support equal pay, because they all say they do even when there is little visible sign of support - or 'close engagement' as some might say.

So I would raise specific issues or questions which put the politicians on the spot to explain where they stand on:
If people keep me posted about how they get on, I'll share their experiences  on the blog site - good, bad or indifferent.

Glasgow's MSPs and MPs (08/09/17)

I sent all Glasgow MSPs and MPs a copy of the posts from yesterday regarding the  Accounts Commission report and the 10 year 'failure of leadership' over equal pay.

If you ask me, Glasgow MSPs and MPs have not been very vocal or visible in standing up for the rights of their local constituents in the fight for equal pay over the past 10 years, but let's hope things are about to change for the better.

So here is a list of the MSPs and MPs whose constituencies lie within the boundaries of Glasgow City Council - engaging with local politicians and asking them where they stand will help to bring the fight for equal pay to a speedy and successful conclusion.

Here's a handy link names all of the various Glasgow constituencies  for easy reference: https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=17759

I contacted all of these MSPs and MPs yesterday, so they are all up to speed on the latest developments and since the local elections in May 2017 Labour has, of course, lost political control of Glasgow City Council to the SNP.

The MSPs are all the same, but there are two changes in the MP list with David Linden replacing Natalie McGarry in Glasgow East and Paul Sweeney replacing Anne McLaughlin in Glasgow North East.

Contact details for Glasgow councillors can be found via the following link to the City Council's web site: https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=17565
