Sour Note

I never heard of John Barrowman until last Sunday, but apparently he's an actor and appears in some programme called Torchwood which I've never seen either.

In any event, for some reason John described Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, as the “pudding of our chieftain race” during an event on Scotland's independence referendum organised by the Better Together or No campaign.

Now Mr Barrowman doesn't have a vote in the referendum which takes place on 18 September 2014 because he doesn't live in Scotland - but clearly he's entitled to his view on the subject which is that fellow Scots who do have a say should vote No.

Fair enough, but why does he have to be so rude and childish?

"Pudding of our chieftain race" indeed - I can't even imagine what this dumb phrase is supposed to mean.

I presume it's intended as an insult rather than a compliment, although why people think it's OK to behave in this way is beyond me.

As far as I can tell the relentlessly negative tactics of the Better Together campaign is putting a lot of people off and what a sour, unpleasant note to inject into an occasion like Burns Night.
