More Equal Than Others
A regular reader from Fife has been in touch to ask:
"Did I know that teachers in Fife Council are entitled to claim a mileage rate of 53p per mile - while everyone else is restricted to 40p per mile?"
Well, no I didn't - and that seems quite an extraordinary state of affairs to me - if this is a normal and accepted practice.
Because the cost of petrol is the same - whether you're a teacher, a school cleaner or a classroom assistant.
So why would one group get paid a much higher mileage rate - an extra 13p per mile - that's worth a third more than the rate other council employees are able to claim?
Maybe someone's having a laugh.
If not it sounds like a two-tier workforce to me - a kind of expenses 'apartheid' which is completely unjustified and blatantly wrong - as well as a terrible waste of public money.
Do readers know if this happen elsewhere - if so, let me know and I'll share the information on the blog site.
