Mansion Tax Mauled

Lord Mandelson has added his voice to those of other senior Labour figures who believe that Ed Miliband's mansion tax is a bad idea.

Gordon Brown famously brought Lord Mandelson back into Government when it looked as though Labour was going down to a terrible defeat at the 2010 general election.

And for a while at least Mandy steadied the ship, so it will be interesting to see if Ed Miliband's listens to what he has to say or ploughs on regardless

In an interview with BBC's Newsnight programme Mandelson said:

“We don’t have an efficient way of taxing property in Britain,” Lord Mandelson said. “I don’t happen to think the mansion tax is the right policy response to that, I think it’s crude, I think it’s short termist.

“What we need is what I think the Liberal Democrats are proposing and that is the introduction of further bands that relate to different values of property within the council tax system. It will take longer to introduce but be more effective and efficient in the long term than clobbering people with a rather sort of crude short-term mansion tax.”

Praise indeed and how unusual for a politician from one party to have something good to say about the policies of a rival.
