Public Opinion vs Humza Yousaf and the Greens

Glasgow MSP Pauline McNeil responded swiftly to my email about the new hate crime legislation - so I made a point of listening to Pauline's contribution to the debate in the Scottish Parliament.

Here's a brief extract of what Pauline had to say - the SNP won the vote on the day with the support of the Greens, but they lost the argument at Holyrood and are doing so again in the court of public opinion.

Scotland's Hate Crime Act - Labour's Pauline McNeil (April 17, 2024)

I had a swift, same-day and positive reply from the Glasgow Labour MSP Pauline McNeil - in response to my letter about the Hate Crime Act (see post below).

Good to see that some politicians are 'on the ball' and responsive to what their Glasgow constituents have to say.

I have sent the following letter to my Glasgow constituency MSP - the SNP's Kaukab Stewart.

And also to the 7 other Glasgow 'list' MSPs - Anas Sarwar, Pauline McNeil, Pam Duncan-Glancy, Paul Sweeney, Annie Wells, Sandesh Gulhane and Patrick Harvie

Dear Pauline McNeil

Scotland's Hate Crime Act

I understand the Scottish Parliament will debate a motion on Wednesday to repeal the Hate Crime Act and would urge you to support this motion for the following reasons:

1) The new act deliberately excludes women who make up 51% of the population

2) The implementation of the new law has been a complete farce despite 3 years of planning

3) There is no evidence to support the First Minister's bogus claim of a 'rising tide' of hate in Scotland

I am sure you are aware that Scottish government ministers are way out of step with public opinion on this issue.

Kind regards

Mark Irvine
