Spending Public Money

The diminutive speaker of the House of Commons - John Bercow - is apparently following in the footsteps of his predecessor - Glasgow's Michael Martin - by trying to block new revelations about MPs' expenses.

Michale Martin has since been 'elevated' to the House of Lords - by the Labour Party, of course.

The latest brewing scandal centres on MPs who rent out their own apartments to other MPs - who are then able to claim for housing costs.

Because they live too far from London - to travel back and forth every day to their place of work in the Westminster Parliament.

New rules were introduced a few years ago but many MPs have actually bought  expensive properties in London - at huge public expense - using the old discredited  housing allowance.

The suspicion now is that some of these 'honourable members' are making a double killing - by renting out these properties to fellow MPs.

Despite the fact that they have already been bought with public money under the old MPs' expenses scheme.

Which means that the public purse has bought these MPs a huge capital asset - in some cases worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

So I hope Mr Speaker does not succeed - because the public has a right to know.
