Humza, Matheson and Accountability

If the SNP's Michael Matheson were in any other party, Humza Yousaf would be demanding he must resign his Falkirk West seat.

Unlike Westminster the Scottish Parliament does not have a power of recall over its members (MSPs), of course.

So it's good to see Alister Jack, Scotland's Secretary of State, offering to help Humza Yousaf drive up standards of accountability at Holyrood.

NB The SNP have been in power for the past 17 years.

“I am writing to offer the UK Government’s assistance in introducing a recall mechanism for MSPs.

“I would be very happy to discuss how the procedures operate within the UK Parliament and options for introducing a mechanism in the Scottish Parliament.

“We could also consult on the mechanics of any such system, including engagement with political parties, to learn the lessons from UK parliamentary experience.

“The UK Government stands ready to work with the Scottish Government in making improvements in this area of such importance to the health of our democracy.”

SNP - Conspiracy of Silence

So here's the issue - two Glasgow MSPs (Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf) have been asked a reasonable question about their use of public money to employ two SNP councillors who already have full-time, salaried jobs as senior elected members of Glasgow City Council.   But these two public servants (both long-serving ministers) refuse to answer, so what to do next? One regular reader suggests raising the matter on the floor of the Scottish Parliament which is a good idea, but requires an MSP who's prepared to put down a written question for Scottish Ministers to answer.
