Áfram Ísland

Iceland need look no further for inspiration in their match later tonight with France than the reaction of this Icelandic commentator to his team's shock 2-1 win over hot favourites England.

I watched the match between Iceland and England live and a woman TV presenter had the best comment of all if you ask me, when she said Iceland were:

"A tiny nation with an enormous heart."

So good luck to the Icelanders in their showdown with the host nation France in Paris.

Now who would have thought that plucky Iceland would have made such an impact on the 2016 Euro football championship?

I always hoped for the best, not least because I have some Icelandic friends, but arguably the smallest country in the competition have shown themselves to have the biggest heart.

On the field the Iceland team has performed like their lives depended on the outcome with skill as well as courage, but the sight of 30,000 supporters at their matches tells you something.

Because that figure is and incredible 10% of Iceland's total population and if Scotland were in the same competition, we would be sending over 500,000 citizens abroad to support our team - the whole of Glasgow just about.

So I take my hat off to Iceland and the Icelanders who face England in the next knockout stage of what is proving to be a hugely exciting tournament.

Áfram Ísland!
