Size Matters

Size matters, to some people at least.

Take Jeremy Corbyn, for example.

Because the new Labour leader seems to answer most questions these days by pointing to the size of his 'huge mandate' which is all very well if you ask me, but there are other things in life Jezza.

Common sense and logic are two such things that spring to mind which would come into play surely if and when the Corbyn-led Labour Party finally decides to face up to the issue of replacing the UK's independent nuclear deterrent system, Trident.

As some readers may know already, Jeremy Corbyn is in favour of unilateral nuclear disarmament and the Labour leader said the other day that if he were to become Prime Minister he would not, under any circumstances, use nuclear weapons.

Which is a perfectly respectable political position to hold, except for the fact that Labour is supposed to be having an open debate over the party's future defence policy.

So Jezza jumping in at the deep end seems to be pre-empting the outcome just a tad, or perhaps he's just trying to stack the odds in his favour because the logic of Corbyn's position is that if he loses the vote, then the newly elected will have to resign, despite the huge mandate of which he is so proud.

The reason being that no party leader, not even one with a huge mandate, can pick and choose which democratic decisions they are prepared to support.

Just imagine what Jeremy Corbyn would have said if Tony Blair had come up with such an announcement - he would have been fit to be tied up, as they say.

So the motto of the story for Jezza is that while size can matter - it's what you do with your mandate that really counts.
