Strike Threat

The Politics Home web site reports that the TUC's annual conference which gathers in Brighton this week will be asked to organise what amounts to a general strike.

Now if you ask me this is a lot of hot air and posturing which flies in the face of recent trade union history.

Because over the past 16 years there hasn't been even the threat of a strike over the issue of equal pay, for example, which tells you all you need to know about the priorities of Britain's union bosses.

Unions to consider general strike over Trade Union Bill

Trade unions are considering “generalised strike action” over the Government’s proposed reforms to union laws, according to the Sunday Times.

MPs will vote on the new Trade Union Bill tomorrow, with the Tories looking to push through minimum turnout thresholds for strikes in some industries and changes to political funding from unions.

The TUC’s annual conference takes place this week in Brighton and the RMT has said the umbrella group should consider “assisting in organising generalised strike action should legal action be taken against any affiliate in connection with these new laws”.

Unite, meanwhile, said there should be “a broad, militant and imaginative campaign against this legislation”.

Cabinet Office Minister Matt Hancock accused the unions of “threats and blackmail”, and linked the unions’ comments to new Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who will address the TUC on Tuesday.

“We’re changing the law so a bunch of left-wing activists can’t hold Britain to ransom,” he said.

“A strike can only go ahead if at least half the union takes part in the vote. It’s disappointing to see union leaders respond with blackmail and threats.”
