NLC Update (14/08/15)

A number of readers from North Lanarkshire have been in touch over an event the GMB is staging in Coatbridge later this evening on the life and times of two Working Class Heroes - James Connolly and Keir Hardie.

Now wouldn't it be ironic if some of the GMB members who are still fighting for equal pay in North Lanarkshire, went along to this meeting and asked a question about the terrible mess the GMB has made of their equal pay claims.

As regular readers know, the GMB and its legal advisers decided to restrict members' claims in North Lanarkshire to only 3 years, despite the fact that all the other claimant representatives were demanding a full 8 years.

I'm pretty certain Keir Hardie and James Connolly would take the view that ordinary union members should not be asked to pay the price for any incompetence on the part of their officials and advisers.

After all the GMB is a powerful and wealthy organisation, so if low paid members stand to lose out because the union bureaucracy has taken its eye off the ball, surely the GMB should step up to the plate and say that the union will fully compensate its members in North Lanarkshire for any financial loss they incur.

While I've no doubts about which side Keir Hardie and James Connolly would choose, the big $64,000 dollar question is: what will Elaine Smith, MSP, and Richard Leonard, the GMB's Political Officer in Scotland, have to say for themselves?
