Backbone of a Jellyfish

I listened to a bit of First Minister's Questions (FMQs) in the Scottish Parliament last week and heard a Labour MSP areas ask about the loss of 16 firefighters jobs in the Lothian area, which seemed to concern him greatly even though the job losses were all being managed by a voluntary redundancy process.

Now the First Minister, Alex Salmond, answered the question very reasonably and even though the voluntary redundancy process was the responsibility of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, not the Scottish Government, he agreed to take up the MSPs concerns.

So contrast this with the spineless behaviour of Labour MSPs in North Lanarkshire where the Labour Council has been exposed for paying traditional male jobs 60% more than their female colleagues.

Pay discrimination which continues to this day, of course, because of the way the Council implemented new pay arrangements following the introduction of a local job evaluation scheme (JES).

In addition, North Lanarkshire's defence of its actions has been torn to shreds at an ongoing Employment Tribunal in Glasgow where senior Council managers have been forced to concede that they have incorrectly graded not 16, but thousands of low pairs jobs done mainly by women workers such as Home Carers, for example.

Yet to this date I have not heard a single Labour MSP raise this issue with Alex Salmond at First Minister's Questions which I find quite incredible because if Labour MSPs were doing their jobs properly they would be raising these issues vigorously on behalf of their local constituents.

Instead they all seem to be too timid or shy to speak out, presumably because North Lanarkshire is a Labour controlled Council and if that is the case then they must all have the backbone of a jellyfish.
