Tawdry Tales

The Sunday papers are full of more 'revelations' about Labour MP - Eric Joyce - and the young Labour supporter - Meg Lauder - who had some kind of relationship the honourable member for Falkirk.

Though as far as I can see - much of it seems to have revolved around pizza and flirty text messages - unless you have a wild imagination.

In any event the young woman seems to have sold her story - such as it is - to The Scottish Sun having been outed by a rival newspaper last week.

But what a tawdry tale - which speaks volumes about the kind of boorish, male behaviour - that should have been nipped in the bud long ago.

Scottish Labour is now talking tough about new rules and new procedures for selecting candidates - and encouraging more people to put themselves forward as candidates.

As local councillors, MPs and MSPs presumably.

Yet we have been here before.

Because this is not the first time the party has run into trouble in Scotland over candidate selection - most famously over Denis Canavan who was barred from standing for Labour in Falkirk - but who went on to win the seat as an Independent.

So what's needed is not more words and 'braveheart' talk - but an honest assessment of why this boorish  behaviour is so often at the heart of Labour's male dominated culture in Scotland.

Eric Joyce's behaviour over losing his licence in 2010 - to a drink driving charge - was a warning sign that was simply ignored.

To get into what appears to be a pitiable state - must have taken the MP a long time and his behaviour must have been evident to many of his colleagues - both male and female.

Yet he was allowed to continue and has now made a complete fool of not just himself - but the Labour party and the voters in Falkirk.

Who are now powerless - it seems - to get rid of Eric Joyce until he chooses to stand down - the Scottish Labour leader says she hasn't even managed to speak to the MP as yet.

So the whole business is a sorry mess - the more so because it is not the first time it has happened.

Nor will it be the last - until local voters can recall their MP and demand a new election - which is what should happen in Falkirk.
