Secret Shenanigans


My contacts inside North Lanarkshire Council tell me that there have been 'secret' discussions taking place - between the present council leadership and the trade unions.

Apparently, the upshot is that some male workers with equal pay claims are to be made settlement offers - which sounds like good news.

But the bad news is that these offers are reportedly worse than the ones made previously - to the council's female workers.

Which is very odd.

Because equal pay is supposed to be about equal treatment for men and women - or women and men.

So why should the men accept poorer offers?

Now this shouldn't come as a big surprise - because we have been here before with North Lanarkshire Council NLC).

Readers with good memories will recall that the council and the trade unions tried to sell people 'a bill of goods' in 2006 - over Job Evaluation if I remember correctly.

But the workforce soon rumbled what they were up to - the council leadership and the trade unions being joined at the hip - politically speaking of course.

To add insult to injury - none of the former APT&C staff seem to be included in this dodgy deal - so it seems that many women are being excluded again - which would be monstrously unfair.

What appears to be happening is that information is being slowly 'drip fed' out - possibly in an attempt to soften up the workforce - instead of the council coming right out front and explaining what's going on.

All I can say is that no agreement has been reached with Action 4 Equality Scotland.

Nor is there likely to be one - which treats men and women claimants differently for no good reason.

No doubt readers in North Lanarkshire will be deeply unimpressed at these secret shenanigans - which are likely to leave a bad taste in people's mouths.

Which is what people should make clear to their local councillors and/or MSPs - with the council elections only weeks away,

SNP - Conspiracy of Silence

So here's the issue - two Glasgow MSPs (Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf) have been asked a reasonable question about their use of public money to employ two SNP councillors who already have full-time, salaried jobs as senior elected members of Glasgow City Council.   But these two public servants (both long-serving ministers) refuse to answer, so what to do next? One regular reader suggests raising the matter on the floor of the Scottish Parliament which is a good idea, but requires an MSP who's prepared to put down a written question for Scottish Ministers to answer.
