No Sell Out
My contacts in North Lanarkshire Council have delivered the goods.
I am looking at a council report on equal pay which proposes a grubby deal - to settle some of its outstanding equal pay claims.
But on much worse terms than claims settled previously.
The council document records that in respect of the male dominated claims:
"... one representative has stated that they would be prepared to accept a lower offer of settlement."
Now as this statement certainly did not come from Action 4 Equality Scotland - it stands to reason that it must have come from the trade unions - with whom there have been secret discussions in recent weeks.
The trade unions appear to be preparing to sell their members short - not for the first time of course - and to try and strike a deal ahead of the council elections.
Which is a shameful way to treat people - in my view.
The proposal also ignores the outstanding claims of all the former APT&C workers - whose position has been strengthened enormously by the collapse of the Edinburgh 'Wilkinson' case.
In fact North Lanarkshire Council - and other Scottish councils - have no credible defence to the claims of their former APT&C workers - for equal pay with traditional male jobs.
Yet instead of doing the right thing and settling these cases - North Lanarkshire Council is dragging its feet while trying to stitch up a dodgy deal with the trade unions.
But only in respect of some of the male claimants - which is an outrageous way for people to behave.
Because all the women claimants would be left high and dry - if the council and the unions get their way.
While this latest group of men would end up with a lot less - than they really deserve.
So my advice to workers in North Lanarkshire is:
1 Don't put up with these trade union shenanigans
2 Don't sign your rights away without taking proper advice
3 Consider transferring your claim to Action 4 Equality Scotland
4 If you haven't already registered a claim, then do so now - before it's too late
