Fair's Fair and Equal Pay

Yet another reader from North Lanarkshire has been in touch - to say that she has contacted the Council Leader - Councillor Jim McCabe.

See post dated 1 February 2012 - 'Ask an impertinent question' - for the background and details of Councillor McCabe's e-mail address.

Now all that this reader is doing is asking North Lanarkshire Council - very politely - to get its head out of the sand and treat people fairly by settling the outstanding equal pay claims.

To my mind that's an entirely reasonable thing to ask - not least because the claims have already been settled by other councils - including Edinburgh City Council.

So the other councils which have been hiding behind Edinburgh for all this time - awaiting the outcome of the Court of Session decision in the Wilkinson case - have run out of time and excuses.

In other words they should do the right thing and settle their outstanding cases - instead of messing people around - which is what has been happening these past four years and more.

Here's part of what the reader from North Lanarkshire had to say.

Hi Mark

I have finally taken your advice and sent an e-mail to Jim McCabe at NLC.

I told him it was now time to treat APTC workers with the same dignity and respect that we  provide to our elderly clients while working as employees of North Lanarkshire Council.

Thank you for giving me the confidence to do this and hopefully if enough of us send e-mails it will have the desired outcome.

Many thanks

C"

The reader added that as a regular voter - she would also have to think very carefully  about supporting the Labour party again.

Especially if these long-running cases are still not settled - by the time the local council elections come around in May 2012.

Now you can't say fairer than that really - and the more people who say it the better - especially if they encourage their friends and work colleagues to do the same.
