Compare and Contrast

The latest edition of Private Eye has a great article based on the recent evidence given to the Leveson Inquiry - by Kelvin MacKenzie, former editor of The Sun newspaper.

Kelvin recalls being given the bollicking of his entire life for costing his boss - Rupert Murdoch - a small fortune.

Yet the younger generation seems a tad more relaxed - if his evidence is to be believed - when  a similar 'mistake' was repeated years later under new management.

January 2012

"I received 40 minues of abuse"

Kelvin MacKenzie recalls how Rupert Murdoch gave him a lengthy dressing-down after the Sun had to pay £1 million in damages to Sir Elton John.

December 2011

"I am confident that I did not review the full e-mail chain at the time or afterwards"

James Murdoch tells MPs he replied to Newsof the World editor Colin Myler's email about phone hacking in justthree minutes, didn't read any of the details, and then signed off a £700,000 payment to PFA (Professional Footballers Association) boss Gordon Taylor.

My, my how standards seem to have slipped at News International - £700,00 goes down the drain - yet Murdoch junior hardly bats an eyelid.
